A horrendous week again for young males getting killed. If you read the papers or the online news you would be forgiven for thinking that the police are at fault for the boys death. Is that the true story though?
Yes of course, it would be great if the police office on Limes Farm estate was open 24 hours a day. In fact it would be great if Essex Police had the resources to provide coverage on foot on the estate. The reality of course is that the money isnt there to do it, a different story to the one I want to focus on.
Jack Large, 14, was killed last week after being stabbed twice. Once in the back and once through the back of his neck up in to the brain. Awful in it's own right, and made worse by the fact that the person who is alleged to have done this, is also a child.
To read the papers, you would be forgiven for thinking that these things just happen and that there is no background to the story. You are intelligent enough to know there must be.
It is now a matter of publid knowledge that Jack was subject to an asbo. He was stabbed at 1115 pm. His asbo said he had to be indoors at 9pm. Yet he was stabbed half a mile away from his house. Why was he out?? The papers say that Jack was a reformed ASBO boy. (Ilford Recorder). Yet surely if he was reformed, he would have been obeying the terms of his ASBO. People in the paper are quoted as saying Jack was a normal boy. Does your normal son have an ASBO? Mine doesn't. You don't get an ASBO for helping out the schoolteacher, or for pioneering a fight against knife crime. You get one for consistently being a nightmare to the local population. It would be harsh to say that at 14 you live by the sword. He did not deserve death. Where were his parents? They will no doubt be blaming everyone else, but they have to admit to themselves that they should have had him under control, the state should not raise their children for them.
